Gabon, the country in Equatorial Africa, taking advantage of its strategic position on the Atlantic coast, is implementing ambitious projects as part of its development program. One of these is the project for the extension of a hospital on the university campus in the south part of the capital Libreville. The existing hospital is basically a complex of several buildings with the total capacity of 300 beds. The complex consists of three separate buildings: the intensive treatment pavilion, the general hospital ward and the building housing the service and administration areas of the hospital, interconnected by above-ground passageways. The intensive treatment pavilion has in its centre an open atrium with a diagnostic section on the basement level. Apart from the requirement of providing a fully functional health care institution, one of the main priorities of the client (the Gabon government) was the architectural quality and the visual attractiveness of the proposed complex. The organic structures and the general colour scheme will reflect the colours and shapes of Gabon’s rainforest. The new hospital in Libreville should become another dominant architectural dominant feature of the city.
