Petržalka Housing Estate is with 140,000 inhabitants the most densely populated municipality of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. This municipality also has a severe shortage of adequate sport and culture facilities. The aim of the proposal was to provide a timeless and visually attractive architectural design. The sport hall design is based on the concept of triangles creating and dynamic form which is set in the surrounding area as a diamond in a jewel. The external envelope of this Diamond Arena consists of steel meshing of various dimensions stretched over a steel construction of triangular geometry. This construction is joined to a simple, compact casing the hall which, apart from having structural functions, provides also protection against the weather. The proposed design is also cost effective as the shaping of the steel meshing is simple requiring a minimum of other construction parts and components. The main load-bearing structure consists of the reinforced concrete skeleton. The load-bearing structure of the roof consists of the steel framework made from 300 mm dia. steel tubes creating a uniform vault over the seating areas with the triangular motifs underside. This hall of contemporary design will have a capacity to seat 12,000 spectators for sport event and up to 15,000 spectators for concerts and other culture events.
