This was a relatively modest task which was exceptional not because of the size but for the demanding brief to alter one storey in Pavilion A and turn it into Gynaecology and Maternity Unit. With suitable floor plan, furnishing and colour design, the resulting alteration provides a pleasant environment for patients and health care personnel, which complies with latest requirements for providing gynaecological and maternity care while creating high-standard sanitary and spatial conditions. The project design and construction works had to be readjusted to conform with the requirement for carrying out construction works without significantly disrupting the operations in the remaining sections of the building and without affecting the quality of the completed construction works. In this respect the most demanding tasks were the installation of building services reticulation systems and the alteration to the load-bearing structure to create a new oriel window allowing to extend the wards in one part of the building. The unit now has two- or three-bed rooms with sanitary facilities and two intensive care rooms for the patients, together with a section for newborn babies. The interior design creates a pleasant, homely environment in the spacious maternity rooms where expecting mothers spend their time before delivery.
