The new building of the important Czech cultural and technical institution is one of the Obermeyer Helika’s most exceptional construction projects. The architectural and structural design is quite unique. At the time of the completion it was one of the few construction projects in the Czech Republic which incorporates such a large number of technical and technological innovations. The unparalleled structural design of the long-span load-bearing skeleton with 15 x 15 m bays, the atypic construction of external envelope using non-standard glass components, the exceptional concept of fire prevention system, the use of concrete as interior surface finish and the general concept of air-conditioning of the building incorporating the concept of active concrete core for the first time in the Czech Republic, together with other technical innovations, make the library building really an exceptional structure of this type.
The new building complements the complex of buildings on the Technical University and Institute of Chemical Technology campus. After its opening for the use by students and the professional public the National Technical Library becomes an example of the new modern library in the Czech Republic incorporating the highest user-focused standards and a model to all other library buildings in the country.
