Project description

The revitalisation of the listed cultural monument, the České Budějovice railway station, carefully balances heritage preservation with the needs of modern rail transport. The renovation focused on safeguarding the station’s urban and architectural value while improving its technical performance. Works included refurbishing the façades and roofs, replacing the windows and doors, and completely renewing the roof coverings. The interiors have also been significantly transformed. The north and south towers now house new offices for Správa železnic and České dráhy. The north wing has been converted into leasable premises, and part of the service areas adjacent to the first platform now house railway staff facilities. The result is a modernised departure building that retains its historic character while meeting the operational demands of today’s railway network.

KEY FACTS

  • The railway station in České Budějovice has been serving its purpose for more than a century. Designed by architect Gustav Kulhavý in 1908 as part of a standard project for the Imperial-Royal Austrian State Railways, the building features a distinct blend of Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau styles. It was declared a listed cultural monument in May 1958.
  • In collaboration with METROPROJEKT Praha, the A8000 studio undertook a comprehensive renovation of the arrival and departure halls, designing a new retail passageway complemented by a contemporary relaxation zone. The central design approach focused on clearing the space and returning to the original subdued colour palette to highlight the building’s architectural proportions. Visual smog was removed from the interior, and the restoration also included the careful conservation of wall mosaics created by artists Boukal and Březina in the 1970s.
